Orang-utan Pongo pygmaeus & Pongo abelii named from the Malay words for person and forest, literally person of the forest - the orang-utan are among the most intelligent of the primates and are able to create and use a variety of tools for use both with foraging and in construction of their nests. Due to their intelligence they have been widely studied and animals in captivity have been known to learn up to 40 different signs to communicate with.
The Orang-utan is Critically Endangered and listed as one of the top 25 endangered primates. A study in 2007 showed a population of 61,234 Orangs remaining in the wild however if the current trend continues the Orang-utan is projected to become extinct within the next 25 years.
