Sumatran Tiger Panthera tigris sumatrae is one of the smaller species of tiger with darker fur and thicker stripes. Native only to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, this tiger is the only remaining species of the three that inhabited the Sunda Islands along with the Javan Tiger and the Balinese Tiger.

The IUCN classifies these tigers as Critically Endangered with declining populations due to poaching and habitat destruction. However, a lot of work has been put into preserving these rare felines with London Zoo spending £3.6 million on a new facility specifially for rare tigers to encourage breeding in 2013. In 2014, three cubs were born and two more in 2016.
