Sumatran Rhinoceros Dicerorhinus sumatrensis also known as the 'hairy rhino' is the smallest of the rhinoceros species, native to Sumatra and Borneo. A solitary animal that is primarily forest dwelling. The Sumatran Rhino is also the most vocal of the rhinos and in captivity have been observed almost constantly vocalising. The calf will stay with the mother for the first 2 or 3 years of its life.

The Sumatran Rhinoceros is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List with fewer than 100 estimated remaining. Population decline is due to severe poaching as well as destruction of habitats by both legal and illegal logging operations.
